Despite plenty of talent on the pitch, it was a quiet contest in the first half between these Major League Soccer and Liga MX clubs.
Neither side could muster up any genuine threat, but there was a scare for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as he was forced into a double save just before the break.
It wasn't until the second half that LAFC grabbed the lead via Timothy Tillman, who fired the ball into the bottom corner.
This arrived largely against the run of play, with the hosts holding less than 30% possession.
Such a possession stat, therefore, paved the way for Toluca to bounce back.
Jesús Ricardo Angulo made the most of being gifted a foot of space and set himself up to find the bottom right corner beyond a diving Lloris.
However, LAFC managed to get the last laugh when Nkosi Tafari scored a late header with just their second shot on target for the advantage.
The second leg takes place on May 6, with plenty to play for still!
